NEOLAiA Students Explore Inclusion Through New Ways of Seeing during Focus Academy Course Eyes Wide Open at the University of Nicosia

A Unique Learning Experience Focused on Inclusion

From 18–22 May 2026, the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, welcomed students from across the NEOLAiA European University Alliance for the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) of the Focus Academy course Eyes Wide Open: Learning to See Possible Inclusive Worlds.

Dr. Agni Stylianou-Georgiou from the University of Nicosia coordinated the programme, while Dr. Erika Marie Pace and Dr. Emanuela Zappalà from the University of Salerno and Dr. Guillaume Cingal from the University of Tours co-organised the learning experience. Together, they created an interdisciplinary environment where students from different academic fields and educational levels explored diversity, inclusion, and social participation.

Throughout the programme, participants examined key concepts that shape inclusive societies, including belonging, participation, visibility, recognition, equity, and voice. By combining theory, reflection, and practical activities, the course encouraged students to critically explore how these concepts influence everyday life and public spaces.

Turning the University into a Living Classroom

During the week, students transformed the University of Nicosia into a living classroom. They engaged in observation, photography, reflection, and dialogue, using innovative methodologies such as Slow Looking and Photovoice to investigate their surroundings from new perspectives.

These activities encouraged participants to look beyond first impressions and consider how cultural and public spaces can either support or hinder inclusion. By documenting their observations and discussing them with their peers, students developed a deeper understanding of both visible and invisible dimensions of inclusion and exclusion.

The experience also challenged them to question assumptions, recognise overlooked perspectives, and reflect on the ways environments shape people’s opportunities to participate and feel a sense of belonging.

Learning Through Dialogue and Multiple Perspectives

Beyond the academic programme, students embraced the opportunity to collaborate with peers from different countries, cultures, and disciplines. Through discussions, group activities, and shared reflections, they exchanged experiences, challenged one another’s viewpoints, and learned from diverse perspectives.

These interactions strengthened intercultural understanding while helping participants develop skills essential for active citizenship, empathy, and collaboration in increasingly diverse societies.

Building More Inclusive Communities Through Education

The Eyes Wide Open Focus Academy course demonstrates NEOLAiA’s commitment to creating inclusive, innovative, and student-centred learning opportunities. By encouraging critical reflection, empathy, and meaningful engagement with social issues, the programme empowers students to contribute to more equitable communities within and beyond higher education.

Through initiatives such as Eyes Wide Open, NEOLAiA continues to connect students across borders, disciplines, and cultures. Together, they learn not only to understand the world from different perspectives but also to actively shape a more inclusive and connected European Higher Education Area.
