Celebrating Two Years of Progress and Shaping the Future of European Higher Education

The University of Salerno proudly welcomed representatives from nine NEOLAiA universities for a global alliance meeting on 2-4 December – an inspiring moment marking years of rapid progress, strategic collaboration, and a unified vision for the future. This gathering highlighted NEOLAiA’s achievements in strengthening regional impact, accelerating innovation, and building a truly interconnected European university ecosystem.

Since the last NEOLAiA Global Meeting held in Brussels in February 2024 (more about the meeting), the Alliance has driven forward initiatives that empower students and staff, enhance research and innovation excellence, promote inclusivity, and deepen relationships between universities and the communities they serve.

The meeting in Salerno reflected these results while focusing on what lies ahead – the ambitions and transformative collaborations on joint teaching and mobility initiatives, shared research efforts, collaborations on diversity, inclusion, social impact, community engagement initiatives, that will continue shaping Europe’s next-generation education landscape.

A Dynamic Platform for Showcasing Progress

The meeting featured a rich programme designed to share success stories and spark meaningful dialogue:

• NEOLAiA Agora – showcasing alliance-wide results through interactive presentations
• Cross-cutting thematic sessions – demonstrating transformative impact across NEOLAiA’s pillars and missions
• Panel discussion with the rectors and representatives – focused on the main pillars of the Alliance, regional impact, diversity and inclusion, enhanced mobility, digitalisation

Delegates were not only celebrating achievements – they were collectively defining the path forward for increased collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation at every level.

Strategic Work Package Meetings: Building Tomorrow Together

A key component of the gathering was a series of Work Package meetings, bringing together teams from across the member institutions. These sessions provided a dedicated space for:

• Reviewing ongoing tasks and deliverables
• Coordinating upcoming milestones and deliverables
• Exploring new collaborative possibilities for the years ahead

These discussions ensure that NEOLAiA remains proactive, efficient, and ambitious as it continues its mission of transformation.

Inspiring Thought Leadership

Participants heard from distinguished speakers:

• Renáta Tomášková, University of Ostrava (Czechia)
• José Ignacio Jiménez González, University of Jaén (Spain)

They highlighted NEOLAiA’s growing contribution to strengthening both universities and their surrounding regions.

A forward-looking panel titled “What today means for tomorrow: Looking at the current state of Higher Education in relation to the EU, European Universities, and NEOLAiA — What implications does it have for the future?” featured:

• Sebastián Bruque, University of Jaén (Spain)
• Ida Andersson-Norrie, Örebro University (Sweden)

Their discussion explored the evolving European Higher Education landscape and NEOLAiA’s role within it.

Voices from the European University Movement

To broaden the perspective on alliances’ impact, NEOLAiA also reflected on insights from Professor Dr. Beatrix Busse, elected Chair of the FOREU4ALL Community of Practice on how European University Alliances are pioneering a deeper form of cooperation – shaping how Europe learns, innovates, and succeeds together.

Additionally, Ida Andersson-Norrie shared key points from her interview with Professor Dorothy Kelly, Arqus Alliance Coordinator, on how the Alliances enable flexible mobility, new joint programmes, shared research environments, and more inclusive opportunities across borders. 

These insights underlined NEOLAiA’s place within a fast-growing movement that is redefining European Higher Education.

Co-Designing NEOLAiA’s Future

The World Café session invited all partners to collaborate on NEOLAiA’s long-term direction through structured thematic discussions and tangible outputs. These outcomes were unified during the Restitution in Plenary Session, led by Sebastián Bruque and Ida Andersson-Norrie, shaping the alliance’s strategic roadmap for the coming years.

A Milestone with a Forward Vision

The University of Salerno’s warm hosting of this major alliance event symbolized the strength of NEOLAiA’s partnership – united by diversity, shared values, and a commitment to shaping the European University of tomorrow. Delegates departed Salerno, carrying with them renewed drive, fresh ideas, and an even stronger commitment to expand opportunities for students, strengthen regions and shape an innovative future for European Higher Education together.
